Here are a few tidbits I scribbled down at the AASL conference:
Our society has shifted from industrial to conceptual; learners will compete in a more global community so it's essential that they know who to work independently and contribute collaboratively; learners need to blend skills, knowledge, and dispositions to contribute to the ethical exchange of ideas.

How can librarians lead in the library and in the school?

Tech Roundup! Be Internet Awesome & Common Sense Media

Feb 22nd is Digital Learning Day so this month's Tech Roundup will focus on digital citizenship.

One of our roles as librarians is to help students navigate the digital world in a responsible and ethical way. I’m sharing two awesome resources to help you teach digital safety and citizenship fundamentals. Both are aligned with current ISTE standards, both are freely available, and both have learning games and curriculum.

2018 Youth Media Awards

Each year the American Library Association honors books and media for children and teens with its Youth Media Awards. Those awards have been recently announced.
Here's the full list of all 19 awards including the ever popular Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, and Coretta Scott King Book Awards.

AASL Standards: EXPLORE #5

When one explores, one discovers and innovates in a growth mindset. Here are a few tidbits I scribbled down at the AASL conference:  releasing control for teachers can be uncomfortable; when students explore in a group environment, debate and discussion is a natural by-product; curiosity is piqued when kids explore on their own and in a group; the school library is a unique place that allows for individual exploration; builds self-reflection practices; let kids fail; encourage the use of the word "yet" as in: "I don't know the yet."  
What is growth mindset?  Those with a growth mindset believe growth can happen with an emphasis on effort, challenge, development, and feedback, while those with a fixed mindset tend to believe traits cannot be changed. That is not to say this is an either/or deal. We all fall somewhere on the mindset spectrum depending on the day, the circumstance, the mood, etc.

When one curates, one makes meaning by collecting, organizing, and sharing. Here are a few tidbits I scribbled down at the AASL conference:  curation of content is just as valuable as the creation of content; librarian curation can build equity and foster collaboration; helps to builds self-reflection and communication practices among students; curation build meaning and relevance for yourself and for others How can librarians lead in the library and in the school?Routinely update teachers, learners, and parents about school library resources and how they might be used.Use input from staff, students, and the library advisory board when curating materials for the library. Routinely review the collection based on scope, age, condition, and use. When one collaborates, one uses communication strategies needed to fully participate. Here are a few tidbits I scribbled down at the AASL conference:  it’s all about community building; collaboration often makes you question your belief system because you hear opinions and ideas of others; a great way to negotiate meaning in one’s life; often helps make the problem solving process easier for kids; builds skills of 21st century learners in a diverse, collaborative world; companies seek those who have the ability to communicate effectively
How can librarians lead in the library and the school?Explicitly teach communication strategies like questioning, listening, compromise, and negotiation.Create group norms and goals when establishing learning groups.Release control and allow groups to become more independent as their collaboration skills develop.Encourage students to use a variety of communication tools and resources.Cultivate relationships with staff.Routinely practice collaboration …

Digital Learning Day - Feb. 22, 2018

Digital Learning Day was started in 2012 as a way to actively spread innovative practices and showcase teachers, leaders, and instructional technology programs that improve student outcomes. 
Guess what school librarians??  You are a unique combination of teacher + leader + instructional partner!

Digital learning is any instructional practice that effectively uses technology to strengthen a student’s learning experience. It’s not about technology, it’s about learning. It encompasses many different tools and applications to support teaching and learning. Think: digital content and tools, curation, digital citizenship, blended learning, personalized learning, professional learning, online courses, etc.
