Learning Express Library - YOUR Free Online Skills Center

It's always a good time to use the SD State Library databases and other digital resources.

They're vetted. They're robust. They're varied. They're accessible 24/7. They're free at library.sd.gov

As schools manage the spread of the COVID 19 virus, it not lost on me how important these state-provided resources are for all of our students, teachers, parents, and caregivers.

Here's what's also not lost on me:  EQUITABLE ACCESS

Whether it be the absence of broadband in some locations in our state, the lack of quality Internet service at home, not having devices in which to use the Internet, or having unique accessibility needs, equal and equitable access is a thing in our state, across our country, and throughout the world. Over the years, the State Library has focused on equity and access in our state and that work continues.

With that being acknowledged, let me remind you of an excellent database that I can see being super helpful during these times.

Learning Express Library (LEX) is one of my very favorites. It's unique, it's practical, and can be used by a variety of users - students, teachers, and parents/caregivers.

LEX focuses on skill development for academic and career success boasting interactive tutorials, practice exams, flashcards, articles, and e-books.

Some things to note about LEX:

LEX is instantly available in South Dakota without a library card log-in thanks to the State Library's use of GeoIP technology.

Once users have accessed LEX via library.sd.gov > Databases, they should create their own accounts within Learning Express in order to save their work in progress, store score reports, and revisit any practice tests, tutorials, or eBooks.

Not sure how to get started with LEX? Start by visiting SD State Library's Resource Guides. You can also watch video user guides, accessed through the “Help” drop-down menu.

LEX content is neatly organized into centers. They include:

School Center

Build content-area skills for classroom and homework success. Math, reading, English, science, etc.

Adult Learning Center

Improve their basic skills in reading, writing, and math, and prepare for the U.S. citizenship exam.

Career Center

College Center

Strengthen their academic skills, prepare for placement tests, and get ready for graduate school entrance exams.

College Test Preparation Center

High School Equivalency Center
