Information Literacy: The Second Strand of the SD School Library Standards

This is post 3 of 4 about the SD School Library Standards. The first post provided a general overview and a little background history. The second post covered the Textual Literacy strand. This post introduces the Information Literacy strand.

The second of the three strands in the SD School Library Content Standards document is Information Literacy. This strand is all about the research process.

INFORMATION LITERACY (IL): Inquiry & Research

There is only one standard in the IL strand. In the coding system, the number after the strand indicates the standard. [i.e. KG.LIB.IL.1.1]

Students use research strategies to create and share new knowledge.

There are six objectives in the IL strand. In the coding system, the objective is the very last number. [i.e. KG.LIB.IL.1.1]

OBJECTIVE 1

KG.LIB.IL.1.1 - Explore the physical and/or virtual library with guidance.

6.LIB.IL.1.1 - Explore the physical and virtual library with guidance.

9-12.LIB.IL.1.1 - Use self-direction to engage with the physical and virtual library.

OBJECTIVE 2

KG.LIB.IL.1.2 - Formulate, with guidance, questions to investigate a personal inquiry or a learning goal.

6.LIB.IL.1.2 - Generate, with guidance, research questions to investigate a personal inquiry or a learning goal.

9-12.LIB.IL.1.2 - Formulate questions and employ strategies to persistently and creatively problem-solve or explore a personal inquiry.

OBJECTIVE 3

KG.LIB.IL.1.3 - Curate print resources with guidance.
6.LIB.IL.1.3 - Curate, with guidance, print and digital resources for problem-solving using a variety of tools.
9-12.LIB.IL.1.3 - Independently and collaboratively curate print and digital resources for problem-solving using a variety of tools.

OBJECTIVE 4
